Hazardous common mistake people make with plastic containers in the microwave

How often do you bung a plastic container or plate in the microwave and set the dial to 'nuke' without giving it a second thought?
If this sounds like you, then according to food and nutrition experts, it needs to stop. In fact, by doing so you could be placing yourself and your family in harm's way . Lindsey Malone, dietitian and manager of nutrition at the Cleveland Clinic told WBRC : "You want to look on the container, and see if it has a microwave safe label.
"That is regulated by the FDA and tested. If it doesn't, I definitely would not put things in the microwave. Not in the dishwasher either because of the high temperatures."
This is because there is something dangerous that happens when many plastics are heated that can increase your risk for diseases like cancer. Even plastic containers which say they're microwave safe and BPA free should be avoided, Malone advises.
"With plastic, you can have high temperatures from the microwave or the dishwasher, those plastics can become unstable and components can get into your food," added Malone.
Instead, where possible, buy and use either ceramic or glass containers. If an existing plastic container becomes scratched or discoloured, then that's a sign it needs throwing out.
