Mother drowns 10-day-old son in bathtub because she wanted to end his life


A mother admitted to drowning her newborn baby because she wanted to end his life, according to police in New York. Rochester police said that they have arrested 25-year-old Markiya Mitchell after being accused of filling a bathtub with water and drowning her 10-day-old son. Mitchell has been charged with one count of second-degree murder. She was booked into the Monroe County Jail and was denied bail.
According to the police investigation, on Monday, at around 12:30 p.m., Mitchell filled the bathtub with water. She then placed her son, 10-day-old Jeremiah, into the bathtub and held his head underwater. At around 2:30 p.m., an adult in the home entered the bathtub and found Jeremiah floating in the water. The adult called 911. Police officers who arrived at the home located at 31 Locust Street found Jeremiah unresponsive in the bathtub.
The newborn was taken to the Rochester General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. During questioning by police, Mitchell admitted to drowning her son because she wanted to end her life. Mitchell had another child, a 7-year-old girl. She was placed with a relative.
