A mass march was held, including homemade graves and the laying of flowers, after 103 geese were killed by officials. The birds had been rounded up and shot dead because of local complaints, according to the Virginian Pilot. However, around 75 people turned up to pay their respects to the geese, and to show the authorities in the US town that they were against the killings.

Many held placards saying #TeamGeese, and during the march a special shrine was set up. Residents had apparently complained the geese were leaving behind too many pieces of excrement in the area.
However, after the US Department for Agriculture killed the birds, a tidal wave of emotion was released. People came from across the Kings Grant area of Virginia Beach to pay their respects, and to protest against the death of the birds.

Protesters grabbed placards lambasting ‘human entitlement’ as they marched around the pond where the geese would gather. Karen Roberts, who organised the memorial, said she was outraged when she heard of the mass extermination.
The graves, placed outside local Witt Park, have been kept in place with American flag rosettes stuck to the park’s signs.
