Ajax midfielder Abdelhak Nouri has suffered 'serious and permanent brain damage' after collapsing during his side's pre-season friendly with Werder Bremen on Saturday. The 20-year-old midfielder received CPR on the pitch and was airlifted to hospital in Austria after falling to the ground in the 73rd minute of the game. Doctors had been cautiously optimistic about his prospects, but the Dutch club have now confirmed that Nouri's diagnosis is career-ending. Ajax tweeted: '#Ajax are deeply saddened by the news that Appie Nouri has been diagnosed with serious and permanent brain damage.
'Our thoughts and prayers go out to him and his loved ones in this difficult time.'
Nouri had been kept in an induced coma in intensive care since Saturday's incident, with Ajax confirming on Tuesday that his condition was no longer life-threatening.
In a statement, Ajax said: 'The player is still at the Intensive Care in the hospital in Innsbruck. His situation is stabilised and his life is out of danger.
'A CT scan and a few other neurological tests didn't show any abnormality, so doctors are "cautiously positive" about the situation. However, these results don't give any certainties about a good recovery.
Nouri made 15 appearances for Ajax's first-team last season, including three in the Europa League, and scored on his senior debut in a 5-0 win over Willem II in the Dutch Cup. He was tipped to have bright future having been a regular in all of Holland's youth teams, playing on 19 occasions for the country's Under 19s.
