Over 30 feared dead at football viewing centre in Calabar, Nigeria


Over 30 people have been reported dead at a football viewing centre in Calabar, Cross River State capital after being electrocuted by a high tension cable that reportedly fell on them. The  unfortunate football fans had gathered at the centre to watch a UEFA Europa League quarter-final match between Manchester United and Anderlecht. According to reports, a transformer near the viewing center fell which caused one of the high tension cables attached to the transformer to fall on the zinc of the viewing center building. At least 30 people died from the electrocution while the few that survived were badly burnt and have been taken to Cross River state Teaching hospital.

The Cross River state governor, Ben Ayade in statement signed by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Chief Press, Mr Christian Ita, sympathized with the family of those who lost their lives saying the incident marks a dark chapter in the life of the state. He promised to look into the cause of the accident in order to prevent a recurrence.


Electricity authorities, have said it is illegal to construct buildings near high tension cables.
