Forget investing in property or the share market – if you want iron-clad growth from your money your best bet is pick up a very old Holden. That's the advice from Lloyds auctioneer Lee Hames, who expects a pristine HT GTS Holden Monaro from 1970 to break records at a classic car auction this Saturday. With more than 160,000 potential buyers expected to tune in to the auction's live stream online, Hames expects the piece of Aussie motoring history to fetch a staggering $300,000. With just 119,000 km on the odometer, this Monaro in "Platinum Metallic" represents what many enthusiasts call the "golden age" of Australian motoring.

First released in July 1968, the Monaro was Holden's answer to the two-door muscle cars that were experiencing immense popularity overseas in America. Boasting a meaty 5.7 litre V8 engine made by Chevrolet, a two-speed power glide automatic transmission and twin air-scoops on the bonnet, this HT Monaro was (and still is) the ultimate boy's toy.
"The car is immaculate and has just gone a complete bare metal restoration all works carried out by a well-established elite restoration company," boasts Lloyd's website.
"This car now is very rare indeed and most desirable for the astute collector."

And it appears that there are far, far more "astute collectors" than you might realise – in January this year the same auction house sold a vintage 1977 Torana for $260,000 in just minutes. The mint-condition two door hatchback attracted a huge crowd of bidders from around the country, with most participants choosing to log on remotely rather than bid in person.
The 1970 HT GTS Holden Monaro is due to go under the hammer at Lloyd's Auctions in Queensland this Saturday.
