Hope Solo, US female goalkeeper suspended for Rio misconduct

US women national team goalkeeper Hope Solo has been suspended from the national team for six months, the U.S. Soccer Federation announced on Wednesday. According to SI's Grant Wahl, Solo's contract with U.S. Soccer was also terminated. Per Rich Nichols, executive director of the USWNT Players Association, an appeal will be filed claiming a 'violation of Ms. Solo's First Amendment Rights.' The player was suspended for 'conduct that is counter to the organization's principles,' a statement from U.S. Soccer read. Solo was suspended for 30 days last year for conduct at the team's training camp. She was also charged with domestic violence after a 2014 incident.
The suspension is effective immediately and comes due to her comments at the 2016 Summer Olympics, where she called Sweden 'cowards' after the U.S. fell to the eventual silver medalists in the quarterfinal round.
