Shopping mall under construction collapses in Ogun State killing one


The Ogun State government on Friday confirmed the death of a woman in the collapse of an ultra-modern shopping complex at the popular Itoku market in Abeokuta, Nigeria. The state’s Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr Dayo Adeneye, gave the figure while addressing reporters at the scene of the incident in the capital city in south-west Nigeria. He also stated that eight people escaped unhurt and that five others were receiving treatment in the hospital. Search and rescue operations are continuing to ensure there are no other persons trapped in the rubble of the building that was under construction. The Commissioner also sympathised with the family of the woman who lost her life in the incident.



At the scene of the incident, the Southwest Coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Yakubu Sulaimon, said that equipment and officials of NEMA, Ogun State Fire Service and that of other relevant agencies were on ground for the rescue operations. The cause of the collapse of the building, reported to have collapse around 8:30AM, is yet unknown.
