Boyfriend a prime suspect as pregnant woman is executed for refusing abortion

Candace Pickens, 23, and her 3 year-old son, Zachaeus, were both shot and left for dead on Thursday, (May, 12). Their bodies were found by a jogger in Asheville, North Carolina. She died on scene after being shot in the head at point-bank range as her son, Zachaeus was also shot in the face and left for dead after witnessing his mother’s execution. Her abusive boyfriend/baby daddy, Nathaniel Elijah Dixon, is the prime suspect. Police reports confirmed Dixon had an extensive violent history that included attempted robbery and allegations of domestic violence against another woman with whom he had a child.
Prior to her death, Candace discovered she was pregnant with Dixon’s child and insisted on keeping the baby as abortion was not an option. Her family and close friends believed that was the reason for her death as her boyfriend, Dixon, opposed it.

Dixon is facing a first-degree murder

Police said Candace died at the scene of the incident while Zachaeus was taken to a hospital where he was in stable but critical condition after undergoing emergency surgery. Dixon, Candace’s boyfriend and prime suspect to her murder was arrested in Ohio, Columbus, where he had fled last week. Columbus police reportedly rescued a 21-year-old female, whom Dixon had taken as hostage when he was arrested. Dixon is awaiting extradition back to North Carolina, where he is facing charges of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder and child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury.
