Ryanair passenger who was scalded by boiling tea on flight wins payout

A Ryanair passenger has won a payout after claiming his genitals were scorched when an air hostess spilled a boiling cup of tea on his crotch. Ronald Furlong, from Wexford, was suing the airline for £28,000 after he was badly injured on a flight from Dublin to London in August 2012 and has taken the airline to court. Mr Furlong's genitals, thighs, groin and abdomen were hurt when the hot drink fell into his lap when being passed over him to another passenger, the DailyMail reports .
The 33-year-old was in 'immediate pain' and forced to tear off his trousers in the aisle in front of other shocked passengers, he said. Mr Furlong was then forced to sit on an emergency seat with a dressing applied to the scalded parts of his body. He has since taken Ryanair Ltd to the Irish Circuit Civil Court in Dublin for a personal injury claim. Mr Furlong said that the airline had failed to ensure that staff transferred the hot drink with a secure holder, causing his injuries.
The victim said that his social, domestic and recreational lifestyle had been 'interfered with' after he was burned. Ryanair had prepared a defence and were ready to claim that they were not responsible and that it was his fault - spilling the drink himself. The Irish airline, run by Michael O'Leary and once named the world's second worst brand for customer service, believed that he was not paying attention and had been careless just before the tea fell. But his barrister told a hearing this week that the airline had agreed to settle, believed to be up to 38,000 euros (£28,000), according to the Irish Times. Circuit Court judge Mr Justice Raymond Groarke also awarded Mr Furlong his legal costs.
