#periodsarenotaninsult: Women respond to Donald Trump’s comments

Women have been ‘live-tweeting’ their periods, after Donald Trump’s comment about “blood coming out of” Megyn Kelly, the host of last week’s Republican party leadership debate.
Kelly had challenged Trump during the debate by saying, “ You’ve called women you don’t like fat pigs, dogs, slobs, and disgusting animals”. However, Trump replied by saying, “Only Rosie O’Donnell”. Trump argued that he was being treated unfairly by Kelly and during an interview with CNN’s Don Lemon, he added that he didn’t respect Kelly as a journalist.

"Kelly gets out and she starts asking me all sorts of ridiculous questions," he told Lemon. "You could see there was blood coming out of her eyes. Blood coming out of her wherever."
Many have insinuated he said this because she was a woman and on her period at that time. He himself was swift to refute that interpretation, saying that he'd meant to say "nose" or "ears", but plumped for "wherever" simply in an attempt to change the subject.

In view of this, the sexist remark has sparked a backlash on social media by Femsplain founder Amber Gorgon via a website, periodsarenotaninsult.com. The website allows Twitter users to easily tweet at Trump that they are either on their period "right now," "getting my period soon" or "I don't get a period but I also don't use that as an insult."
