Wayne County prosecutor, Kym Worthy has charged an 11-year-old boy for shooting 3-year-old Elijah Walker. The 11-year-old boy, whose name was not released because he is not being charged as an adult but as a juvenile, was charged with manslaughter with a weapon aimed with intent but without malice, as well as using a firearm during a felony.
According to the police, the shooting took place inside a car packed behind a residence on the 16000 block of Eastwood Street. The 11-year-old was said to be visiting his father when he took a handgun from the bedroom closet and threw it out a window and into a backyard. After going outside and retrieving the gun, the boy entered the vehicle Walker was sitting in and allegedly shot him in the face for unknown reasons.
Worthy was quoted saying: "I cannot remember a time where we have charged someone so young with taking a life," Worthy wrote in a press release. "Very unfortunately and very tragically, the alleged facts in this case demanded it.” He further explained that the shooting was intentional but without malice.

A recent report on CBS News stated that a Detroit judge has ordered a mental competency exam for the 11-year-old boy and urged the public to lock up their guns, saying they're a "magnet" for curious children. During the brief procedural hearing Monday, the boy's attorney requested the competency exam to determine whether the boy has the ability to understand the manslaughter charge filed against him.
